What did the scattering cost?
Nothing obviously broke. The questions that can be answered are still being answered, by more capable people than there have ever been. That is exactly what makes the cost hard to see.
The cost is not that the answerable questions go unanswered. They do not.
It is that nobody is drawing the maps for the questions that have no evidence.
Observers everywhere. Scholars everywhere, at the head of every field philosophy handed a question to. Philosophers almost nowhere.

A civilization can lose one of these jobs entirely and never notice — from the outside the two are nearly identical, and the loss is silent.
