Controlism
Three elements, and only one of them is you. The other two are what you steer.
What it rules out
your body is you
Set that down. The body is a vehicle — the thing that feels heat and cold and pressure and pain. You are not your body; you have one.
the mind is the “I”
Set that down. The mind is the second vehicle — the thing that thinks, remembers, plans and imagines, and the running narration is part of it. The voice sometimes says cruel and false things, and something in you hears it and answers that is not true. The part that can hear the voice and judge it is not the voice.
the self means soul, or consciousness, or ego
Set that down. Here it is the third element, defined by what it does rather than what it is made of. The definition deliberately does not say the self is a soul, and does not say it is not one.
strength of the self means willpower or discipline
Set that down. It is how much of the outside shaping is absorbed, resisted or redirected, and how fast command returns after something takes it. It is not effort and it does not look like straining.
How it is built
Two of the three are vehicles — a thing a self has and steers, rather than a thing a self is. “A vehicle is not the driver and the driver is not the vehicle — but nothing moves properly without a driver, and the driver goes nowhere without the vehicles.”
The third is named by its function: the governor, the element that reads what the vehicles deliver and determines what happens next. Naming it by the job is what lets the theory stand without requiring a soul, a God, or any particular metaphysics.
What varies between people is the strength of the self — and the foundation is blunt that it is trainable rather than fixed. The method it gives is one corner: “You do not strengthen the self by a grand act of will applied to your entire life at once. That fails, for everyone, every time; the whole life is too many fronts. You strengthen it by taking command of one corner.”
Where it meets the others
- All fourStrength of the self is the master variable — “every one of the five theories answers what makes a life go well with this one number, in five dialects.”
- Twosupplies what the vehicles deliver: the governor reads the four connections.
- Fiveis the same governor’s output — the self reads its four connections and responds.
- Fouris what it governs: you govern choices, and are only ever aware of urges.
Where the ground is unwalked
What the self is ultimately made of. The foundation holds that the self is real as a governing element and deliberately leaves the composition open — the question is marked in the book itself, and it is one of the twenty-seven the site marks as unwalked.
The edge of this page. This is the shape of the theory, not the argument for it. The reasoning that gets from outside forces shape the body and mind to therefore a third thing governs them is in the sealed work.
Nothing on this page is composed. Every sentence is drawn from what is already published here — the front page, the glossary, the questions and the Reports. Where a claim is compressed, it is compressed from one of them and adds nothing they do not say. The argument is in the sealed work.
